The Empire Strikes Back - Betfair signs Imper1um

The online poker room today announced they have signed well-known Canadian pro poker player Sorel Mizzi to Team Betfair.

Mizzi, also known as Imper1um online, will join internet sensation and WSOPE Main Event winner Annette Obrestad on a team that is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with.

The just turned 21 Mizzi rose to fame by climbing the online ladder and consistently ranking as one of the top online pros in the world. Mizzi overcame many obstacles (at one point he won $50,000 in one week and lost it all in just one more week) to reach the elite status he currently enjoys.

Recently Mizzi has started to use some of his internet winnings to test the waters of live play and he's had some success. Mizzi cashed for $280,284 by placing third at the 2007 Irish Open and came in 15 for $154,705 at the WPT Fifth Annual Five Star World Poker Classic. Mizzi also had his first cash in the WSOP Main Event in 2007. He finished 208th for $51,398.

"Overall 2007 was a great year for me and by joining Betfair Poker in 2008 I'm getting in with a team which not only has a great reputation but more importantly, it's going places," Mizzi said. "With Betfair backing us, I reckon Annette_15 and I will have more than enough firepower to take down a few of the big names in tournament poker."

It's also an important signing for Betfair Poker which has become a major player in the poker industry after sponsoring the WSOPE and signing the eventual winner.

"I am proud to add a player like Sorel Mizzi to our team," said Betfair's Head of Poker. "He is regarded as one of the best online players in the world by many and has the results to prove it. Now that he has joined Team Betfair alongside poker pro Annette Obrestad I honestly believe we have two of the best tournament players in the world right now. There is a new world order, look out!"
